There are some requirements that contractors must meet if they plan to use shotcrete in their projects. A pre-construction meeting is the first requirement. The engineer will arrange these meetings before the start of work.
The surface that will be cure must be cleaned thoroughly. This is to ensure there are no voids, growths or other materials that can interfere with the bonding process of the shotcrete. Rebar and concrete that are not asphaltic, for example, must be removed. It is important that the surface be clean and level. You can remove any spray residue with a stiff bristle mop.
After the surface has been prepared, the contractor will need to provide all necessary equipment, labor and materials for the project. Additionally, the contractor must have enough shotcrete in order to meet the specifications. To transport materials to the location, contractors will normally use a ready-mix truck. Other equipment might be required depending on the type and size of the project.

A contractor will need to use many different methods to prepare a surface in shotcrete. Abrasive blast cleaning and high pressure water blasting are all acceptable methods.
The shotcrete can be used on top or in place of any existing structure. However, the surface must be protected from drying right away after it has been applied. You will need to cover the shotcrete with an impervious layer. It should be trimmed approximately 45 degrees from your work surface.
Once the surface is prepared, the shotcrete nozzle should be oriented perpendicular to the working face. Unless otherwise specified, the shotcrete shall be applied from the lower portion of the area upward. It is possible to place additional layers of shotcrete in order to repair smaller areas of the job.
The consistency of the shotcrete must adhere to the surface without flowing, and it should produce a rich, glossy finish. Pozzolanic material can be added to control the consistency. You must also control the amount of water that is added to the mixture.

Before placing shotcrete, the contractor will need to perform a series of tests. Each test panel should be 3 1/2 inches in thickness and have two 4-inch bars on either side. A qualified team must perform the test panels. They must provide all necessary materials for the project, and also perform coring. Upon approval of the test panel by the Engineer, the shotcrete contractor will be able to proceed with the substructure repair.
A contractor must give the Engineer reasonable notice before using shotcrete. The Engineer will be able to inspect the work and determine if it is satisfactory. Any repairs not acceptable might be stopped.
The contractor must also ensure that the surface is uniformly distributed from batch to batch. Shotcrete with a thin or too thick surface will not be capable of enduring the stresses encountered during construction. It is also important to keep the shotcrete's temperature below 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
